The Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR) received a Special Achievement in GIS (SAG) Award at the Esri International User Conference held in San Diego, Calif., recently. This award acknowledges vision, leadership, hard work, and innovative use of Esri’s geographic information system (GIS) technology.

Accepting the award on behalf of ADCNR was Ashley Peters with the State Lands Division. Organizations from around the world honored at the Esri User Conference span industries including agriculture, cartography, climate change, defense and intelligence, economic development, education, government, health and human services, telecommunications and utilities.

ADCNR uses Esri ArcGIS technology to visually share Forever Wild Land Trust and departmental information with the public through user-friendly interactive maps. According to State Lands Division Director Patti Powell, Ashley Peters has been instrumental in furthering the department’s objective through the use of Esri GIS technology. “Ashley used the software to create interactive maps so that anyone can go to our website and find a state park, wildlife management area or other recreational lands managed by ADCNR,” she said. “These maps are helping our constituents learn about public lands and what opportunities are available.” The maps can be viewed at and
