The transaction provides for approximately 27,858 acres within the Bibb and Shelby County portions of the Cahaba River WMA, and 33,280 acres within Tuscaloosa and Walker counties for the Mulberry Fork WMA. These two units represent heavily utilized public hunting areas adjacent to the greater Birmingham metropolitan area. The project is so unique that other states have called to ask how Alabama was able to accomplish this venture. That speaks volumes for the success of Forever Wild!
This project has been crucial in our efforts to advance the long-term protection of recreational lands in central Alabama. It’s just one example of the many strides the Forever Wild Program has made to obtain land for use by the public. Forever Wild will need to be re-approved by the Legislature and the public when its 25-year term is up. When that time comes, I hope the citizens of Alabama will vote to continue this important program. To learn more about Forever Wild visit www.alabamaforeverwild.com.
