Creek - The body of the creek chubsucker has 39 to 45 mid-lateral scales but no lateral line.

Lake - Found below the Fall Line, the lake chubsucker has a deeper body and reaches a larger adult size than the creek chubsucker.

Sharpfin - The largest chubsucker in Alabama, the sharpfin chubsucker usually has a pointed dorsal fin, but the fin may become rounded on large individuals.
