Brown Algae

Scientific Name: (Various Genera) 

Distinguishing Characteristics:
Brown algae free-floating in the water column; the water itself appears brown. 
•Most brown alga in Alabama are in the Euglena family, such as Trachelomonas spp.; and are commonly found in ponds that receive nutrients from organic wastes.
Brown algae blooms can become dense and lead to fish kills in ponds, just like dense green algae blooms.
