Columbiana Woman Wins Drawing For the Outdoor Alabama Canoe

November 07, 2003

Registrants at the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources’ booth at the Alabama National Fair vied for the Outdoor Alabama canoe on display in the booth. The contest, sponsored by Outdoor Alabama magazine, offered the canoe package -- canoe, paddles and PFDs -- and secondary prizes of magazine subscriptions.

Academy Sports and Outdoors’ Hoover store donated the canoe to the magazine for this special event. Southern Trails, Inc. of Montgomery donated the two paddles, and West Marine of Montgomery donated the two PFDs.

Conservation Commissioner M. Barnett Lawley drew the winning registration slips from the more than 3,000 entries received during the 10-day fair. Amy Colquitt of Columbiana, Alabama, was the grand prize winner.

Winning the canoe came as a big surprise to Colquitt, whose family is as excited about the win as she is. Amy’s husband, Ricky, and children Hannah and Alex Gamble are looking forward to a canoeing trip very soon. “We had actually been thinking about buying a canoe,” she said. “I love being outdoors. My parents live on Lay Lake, so we have access to the water.”

By luck of the draw, five one-year subscriptions to Outdoor Alabama magazine were awarded to Jessica Norris, Honoraville; Connie Tucker, Montgomery; John Parker, Montgomery; Gregg Guthrie, Montgomery; and Peggy Thornton, Alexander City.

Outdoor Alabama magazine, published five times a year, is the official publication of the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, and offers outstanding color photos and features on hunting, fishing, wildlife viewing, and other outdoor activities to enjoy in Alabama’s great outdoors. Its pages contain advice, news and insights on conservation concerns not available anywhere else. One issue is a combination Conservation Directory and colorful Conservation Calendar. For more information call the magazine office at 334-242-3151 or 1-800-262-3151.
