Workshop Teaches Outdoor Skills to Women

July 14, 2003

Women ages 18 and older can learn new outdoor skills at the Becoming an Outdoors Woman (BOW) workshop sponsored by the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. The next workshop will be held October 3-5, 2003, at the 4-H Center near Columbiana in Shelby County.

BOW is a three-day adventure workshop for ladies that offers beginner-level skills training for an array of activities ranging from deer hunting to camp cooking. BOW participants can choose from activities such as camping, backyard wildlife, nature crafts, map and compass, mountain biking, shooting sports (pistol, rifle, shotgun, muzzleloader), fishing, hunting, canoeing, nature crafts, archery, ATV handling, motor boat handling, and more. Two new classes are being offered this session: falconry and photography. Participants can also obtain their Hunter Education Certification and Boating Safety Certification during the weekend event.

The BOW workshop is open to females at least 18 years of age. Many participants are repeat attendees who bring someone with them to experience what they have discovered to be a fun weekend filled with challenging activities. Attendance regularly includes senior adults, mothers and daughters, co-workers and best friends.

Instructors are Department of Conservation employees and volunteers who enjoy sharing their skills with beginners. All equipment is provided except for those taking the photography class; those participants will need to bring their own cameras.

Registration is $175, and covers all meals, dormitory lodging, program materials and instruction. Enrollment is limited to 130 applicants, and classes fill up fast. A complete schedule and registration form can be found on the Department of Conservation’s Web site at www.dcnr.state.al.us/administrative/IE/bow.html.
