Gov. Declares April 24, 2010 “Picnic in the Park Day”

Montgomery, Ala. – Gov. Bob Riley has declared April 24, 2010 “Picnic in the Park Day.” This family-oriented event is an excellent opportunity to learn what Alabama State Parks have to offer. The public is encouraged to visit one of the participating state parks on April 24 and bring along a picnic to enjoy with your family.
 
Picnic in the Park Day open house events and specials across Alabama:
 
Cathedral Caverns State Park in Marshall County
  • Free “Friends of the Cave” passes to the first 10 adults on each of the seven scheduled tours.
 
Cheaha State Park in Cleburne County
  • Free self-guided tours 10 a.m. - 3 p.m.. Gate attendant will give directions to each site available.
  • Maps with trail information and a coupon for the picnic special at the restaurant.
  • A historical information flyer will be available to all guests at the CCC Tower.
  • Guests can register at the gate for a free night of camping (two passes will be drawn) for Sunday - Thursday. 
 
Chewacla State Park in Lee County
  • Free park entrance for ages one thru 18, and 62 and older.
 
DeSoto State Park in DeKalb County
  • Campground Open House – gates will be open from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.
  • Blacksmith and Forging Demonstration at the JSU’s Little River Canyon Center.
  • April 24, National Junior Ranger Day at DeSoto State Park and Little River Canyon National Preserve.
  • Fly Fishing Techniques, equipment supplied for 10 people, $35 fee.
  • Spring Open Studio at Orbix Hot Glass. Glass blowing demonstrations.
  • Rappelling Adventure, all gear plus basic instructions, $37 fee.
  • Treasure Hunt Adventure, five-hour tour of Manitou Cave.
  • A log cabin and motel room will be open for inspection and will be manned by volunteers.
  • Lodge lobby will be set up with light refreshments and guests can register for a free motel room and breakfast, two will be awarded. Will also give away a DeSoto State Park T-shirt.
  • Restaurant will run a lunch special with free coffee, iced tea or punch. 
 
Florala State Park in Covington County
  • The walking trail will be open to the public.
 
Frank Jackson State Park in Covington County
  • Free park entrance.
  • Free boat launch.         
  • Tours of hiking trails.
  • Possible light refreshments.
 
Gulf State Park in Baldwin Country
  • Golf course will offer a free bucket of balls, one bucket per person.
  • Nature center will have a nature walk, nature time and a movie or slide show.
  • Sightseeing charge will be waived at the Gulf State Park Pier.
  • One cottage will be open for the public to view, refreshments served from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.
 
Joe Wheeler State Park in Lauderdale, Limestone and Lawrence Counties
  • One of the newly renovated rooms will open to the public for viewing.
  • Discounts on pontoon boat rentals and free pedal boat rentals.
  • Discount on river cruises.
  • Food and Ice Cream for sale.
  • Live singing.
  • Volleyball and horseshoes.
  • Sidewalk chalk for kids.
  • A sailboat and sailing demonstration.
  • A drawing for a free stay at lodge or cottage.
  • Nature hike.
 
Lake Guntersville State Park in Marshall County
  • Guided nature hikes throughout the day.
  • Discounted rental on flat bottom fishing boats and canoes.
  • Light refreshments in the lodge lobby throughout the day.
  • Register for a free two-night stay in accommodation of you choice, based on availability.
  • Picnic lunch special in restaurant.
 
Lake Lurleen State Park in Tuscaloosa County
  • Free park entrance to children 11 years old and younger.
  • Adults, pay one entrance fee and get one free.
  • Discount canoe and peddle boat rentals, $2 off.
  • Drawing for two nights free camping on a basic site Sunday – Thursday on non-holiday or non-football weekends.
 
Lakepoint Resort State Park in Barbour County
  • Light refreshments throughout the day in the Lodge lobby and Marina.
  • Volunteers will be giving tours of facilities.
  • A slide show will be available to show lodge rooms, cabins and cottages.
  • Registration in Lodge lobby and Marina for a weekend getaway and drawings for Lakepoint hats and T-shirts.
 
Meaher State Park in Mobile County
  • Free admission for the day.
  • Staff will be available throughout the park to answer questions.
 
Monte Sano State Park in Madison County
  • A cabin will be open for display to the public.
  • Entrance fee will be reduced to $1 for everyone.
  • Campground will be open for tours.
  • Self-guided history hike of park.
 
Oak Mountain State Park in Shelby County
  • The Interpretive Center and Wildlife Center will be open for tours.
  • The Wildlife Center will provide light refreshments.
  • Golf pro-shop will be open for tours and information of the course. 
  • Drawing for a free round of golf.
  • The campground will be open for tours and hot dogs, coke and chips will be available at the campground pavilion from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. 
  • Drawing will be held for a free night of camping.
  • Light refreshments will be available at the park office.
  • Drawing will be held for a free night in a cabin.
  • A drawing will be held at the marina for a free one hour boat rental.
 
Paul M. Grist State Park in Perry County
  • Boat rentals will be discounted to half price.
  • Drawing will be held for two free nights of camping, based on availability.
 
Rickwood Caverns State Park near Warrior, Alabama
  • Cave tours will be discounted by $2 for the day.
 
Roland Cooper State Park in Wilcox County
  • Excellent fishing.
  • Jon boat rental, half price.
  • Tour of cabin, if available.
  • Hiking and biking trails open to the public.
 
Wind Creek State Park in Tallapoosa County
  • Cabin Three will be open for the public to view from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.
  • Entry fee and boat launch fee discounted to $3 per vehicle.
  • A reservation desk will be set up in the store and manned by volunteers to take reservations for winter specials camping/cabin rates. Nov. 1, 2010 – Jan. 28, 2011: Cabins - buy two nights get one night free; Camping – buy three nights get one night free.
  • A drawing from all winter reservations for a $50 gift card.
