Knowledge is Power for Hunters in Alabama

Alabama’s annual fall deer hunting seasons will soon kick off with the start of archery season on October 15, and the muzzleloader and firearms seasons in mid-to-late November.  While Alabamians continue to hand down their hunting skills from generation to generation, the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR) offers hunters an additional tool to enhance their  knowledge of where and what to hunt this season – the ADCNR annual harvest reports.

From the newest Wildlife Management Area (WMA) Deer Hunt Report (2009-10) to the most up-to-date Alabama Hunting Survey, hunters will have the numbers and research on where the most likely spots are to have a successful season on public lands. The annual harvest reports and more information on Alabama’s wildlife can be found at http://www.outdooralabama.com/research-mgmt/publications/.

After researching the harvest reports, hunters are encouraged to visit the hunting section of www.outdooralabama.com for safe hunting tips, hunter education course schedules, wild game recipes, an online form to enter harvest information, a full list of seasons and bag limits and much more. Hunters can also conveniently renew their license through the website. 
 
Each year since 1963, the Alabama Division of Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries (WFF) has conducted a survey of a sample of licensed hunters in this state to obtain information in the form of estimates for the number of hunters, man-days of hunting, and harvest levels for each of the game species.
 
According to the WFF Director Corky Pugh the exchange of information between ADCNR and Alabama’s hunters is vital to keeping the state’s wildlife and habitat diverse and sustainable. “Last year more than 9,000 hunters in the state were surveyed,” Pugh said. “Information from the survey combined with various hunter safety programs allows Alabama hunters to enjoy a safe, successful season.”
