Hueytown high school students with disabilities were paired with able-bodied peers to learn how to canoe. The canoeing is a extension of the Fishin' Not Just Wishin' program and was made possible by a grant from the Future Fisherman Foundation and AAHPERD (American Alliance of Health, Physical Education, Recreatuion and Dance) which Treva Artimisi wrote on behalf of the Jefferson County Board of Education. The teachers are Treva Artimisi, Wanda Westbrook, and John Morgan, Adapted Physical Education Specialists, and Lissa Walker, Physical Education Teacher. Administrative support is given by Director Susan Wirt and Supervisor Wilma Stewart. Students worked at their school and the Bessemer YMCA pool before canoeing on the lake at Oak Mountain State Park.
