Alabama Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries Division biologists checked the Legacy Pond to see if wild fish were present. Wild fish would compete with those fish stocked by the Division, upsetting the balance of predator and prey species. Water chemistry was also checked for alkalinity, the ability of water to resist lowering of pH.

Phil Ekema explains the kit he uses to check alkalinity to the Assistant Principal. Fifth grade students learn about pH, the balance of positive hydrogen ions to negative hydroxide ions or how basic or alkaline a solution is.
