The contest is open to any amateur photographer except employees of the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and members of their immediate families. An amateur is defined as someone who does not earn the majority of his or her living from photography.

Photos must have been taken within the past two years. All photos must have been taken in Alabama.

Required:  All photos must be digital images submitted on a CD-ROM/ DVD. Label the CD-ROM/DVD with your name and address. A signed entry form must accompany the CD-ROM. Download entry form.

Photographers may enter up to 10 photos. The photos may be in the same category or spread among different categories.

Photos may be entered in the following categories:

  • State Parks -- Recreational activities, park facilities, scenery or events held at any of Alabama's 22 State Parks operated by the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.
  • Birds -- Native song birds, game birds, shore birds and raptors (includes hummingbirds).
  • Mammals -- Native mammals (pets and livestock excluded).
  • Reptiles and Amphibians -- May include turtles, snakes, lizards, salamanders, etc..
  • Other Native Wildlife -- May include butterflies, insects, snails, crabs, etc.
  • Scenic/Pictorial -- Photos in which natural landmarks, scenery or inanimate objects are prominent; site location required for this category.
  • Nature-Based Activities -- people enjoying recreation such as boating, fishing, hiking, hunting, camping (organized team sports are excluded).
  • Plants and Fungi -- wildflowers, foliage, fruiting bodies, other parts of plants or trees (cultivated flowers, shrubs, etc. are excluded)
  • Youth -- Two divisions: Youth ages 6-12 and 13-18 may enter any of the categories above. All entry rules apply.

By submitting an entry, photographers grant permission to the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources to use photographs in publications or on its Website. However, the photographer also retains the right to use the photo. No photos will be returned.

Entries must be postmarked by October 31, 2014. Winning photos will be published in the February 2015 issue of Outdoor Alabama magazine.
