THE RED HILLS HANCOCK/CFS ADDITION in Monroe County is a wet ravine and upland pine forest site that includes a mix of natural coastal plain habitats and pine-plantation forest situated between drainages of the Alabama River along Tallahatchee Creek. This 1,786 acre acquisition provides crucial habitat for the federally listed red hills salamander, and many other rare species of plants and animals occupying these habitats. The tract also offers recreation opportunities like hunting and bird watching. The tract was purchased in partnership with the Alabama Chapter of The Nature Conservancy, and through financial assistance from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Endangered Species grant program.
