The Division of Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries will be unveiling a new opportunity for public land hunting this upcoming 2017-2018 season. This new public hunting format comes in the form of a Special Opportunity Area (SOA). This year, four SOAs, will offer a limited number of slots for a successful permit holder and guest(s) to hunt a dedicated 300-400 acre unit for a 2-4 day hunt on these select SOAs.  The SOA’s are typically smaller than WMAs in acreage and are more suitable for this limited quota (random draw permit) hunting format to reduce pressure and increase the quality of the hunt.

Limited quota permits to hunt the SOAs will be obtained through an on-line selection process. Applicants will be able to apply for their selected SOA and preferred hunt dates.  The drawing template will be similar to the alligator hunt selection process with the applicant accumulating preference points on each year not selected. The cost will be the purchase of the state hunting license and WMA license. Registration is scheduled to open on August 28th and the draw for these special opportunity hunts will occur and October 3rd. If successful drawing a permit you will be notified via email and have 72 hours to accept your permit. On October 3rd, if you do not recieve an email visit the registration page click on the "Sign in to My Hunts Registration" link at the top of the page and view the status of your hunts and take action as needed to accept your permit if selected in the randon selection process. If you would like to provide your email for future communication, please email your CID, Date of Birth and name to DCNR.Wildlife@dcnr.alabama.gov

The SOAs include: Crow Creek SOA, located in Jackson County. Crow Creek will offer waterfowl hunting on the below listed dates throughout the season for a permit holder and three guests; Cedar Creek SOA in Dallas County and Uchee Creek SOA in Russell County will offer deer and turkey hunting on the below listed dates throughout those seasons for a permit holder and one guest; Fred T. Stimpson SOA in Clarke County will offer adult archery deer hunts for a permit holder and guest, youth gun deer hunts for a youth hunter and youth guest with their supervising adult, and the squirrel hunts for permit holder, youth and up to five guests (at least one additional guest must be a youth).
