Blackbirds, Finches and Allies

Blackbirds - Family Icteridae

Bobolink Dolichonyx oryzivorus. Common in late spring, rare in early summer, and uncommon to rare in fall in all regions. Found in marshes and fields, especially those cultivated with oats, alfalfa, and clover.

Red-winged Blackbird Agelaius phoeniceus. Breeder. Common in all seasons and regions. Found in marshes, brushy, weedy and grassy areas, and especially in wet, cultivated areas. Low Conservation Concern.

Eastern Meadowlark Sturnella magna. Breeder. Common in all seasons and regions. Found in grassy, weedy fields, especially high grass. MODERATE CONSERVATION CONCERN.

Western Meadowlark Sturnella neglecta. Occasional, mostly late fall to early spring.

Yellow-headed Blackbird Xanthocephalus xanthocephalus. Rare in fall, and occasional in winter and spring in Gulf Coast region. In inland regions, occasional in fall and spring. Found in marshes and wet fields.

Rusty Blackbird Euphagus carolinus. Locally fairly common to uncommon in winter and spring, and rare to uncommon in late fall in Tennessee Valley region. In Mountain and Inland Coastal Plain regions, uncommon in winter, spring, and fall. In Gulf Coast region, rare in winter, spring, and fall. Found along edges of ponds, flooded fields, sloughs, streams, and swamps. HIGH CONSERVATION CONCERN.

Brewer’s Blackbird Euphagus cyanocephalus. Fairly common to locally common in winter, early spring, and late fall in Inland Coastal Plain. In Tennessee Valley and Gulf Coast regions, uncommon to rare in winter, spring, and fall. In Mountain region, rare in winter, spring, and fall. Found in feedlots and pastures with livestock. Low Conservation Concern.

Common Grackle Quiscalus quiscula. Breeder. Common in all seasons and regions. Found in open woodlands, especially those with pines and grassy areas; also fields with short grasses or in cultivated fields. Low Conservation Concern.

Boat-tailed Grackle Quiscalus major. Breeder. Common in all seasons in Gulf Coast region. Found in coastal marshes and open, grassy areas near marshes. MODERATE CONSERVATION CONCERN.

Great-tailed Grackle Quiscalus mexicanus. Accidental. Hypothetical.

Shiny Cowbird Molothrus bonariensis. Occasional year round, but mostly in spring in Gulf Coast region. Found in early successional scrub.

Bronzed Cowbird Molothrus aeneus. Occasional, mostly in outer coastal areas, of Gulf Coast region fall, winter, and spring.

Brown-headed Cowbird Molothrus ater. Breeder. Common in all seasons and regions. Found in short-grass areas, especially with livestock. Lowest Conservation Concern.

Orchard Oriole Icterus spurius. Breeder. Common in spring, summer, and early fall in all regions, and occasional in winter in Mountain and Gulf Coast regions. In breeding season, found in open areas, with scattered trees, especially near water. In migration, found in woodlands. Low Conservation Concern.

Hooded Oriole Icterus cucullatus. Accidental.

Bullock’s Oriole Icterus bullockii. Occasional in fall, winter and spring in primarily Gulf Coast region. Found in woodlands.

Baltimore Oriole Icterus galbula. Breeder. Common to fairly common in spring and fall, rare in winter, and occasional in summer in Gulf Coast region. In Tennessee Valley region, fairly common in spring and fall, rare in summer, and occasional in winter. In Mountain and Inland Coastal Plain regions, fairly common in spring and fall, and rare in summer and winter. In breeding season, found in open areas, with scattered trees, especially near water. In migration, found in woodlands. Low Conservation Concern.

Fringilline and Cardueline Finches and Allies- Family Fringillidae

Purple Finch Haemorhous purpureus. Uncommon and erratic in winter, spring, and fall in inland regions. In Gulf Coast region, rare and erratic in winter, spring, and fall. Found in woodlands, especially deciduous. Low Conservation Concern.

House Finch Haemorhous mexicanus. Breeder. Common in all seasons in inland regions.  In Gulf Coast, fairly common in all seasons.  Found in open woodlands, especially those associated with buildings, homes, and gardens.  Lowest Conservation Concern.

Red Crossbill Loxia curvirostra. Local breeder. Rare and erratic in all seasons in primarily Mountain region.  Found in coniferous woodlands. MODERATE CONSERVATION CONCERN.

White-winged Crossbill Loxia leucoptera. Accidental.

Common Redpoll Acanthis flammea. Occasional, mostly in winter, in all regions. Found in early successional stages, especially willow and alder; sightings mostly at feeders.

Pine Siskin Spinus pinus. Fairly common to locally common and erratic in winter, spring, and fall in Tennessee Valley and Mountain regions. In Inland Coastal Plain and Gulf Coast regions, uncommon to locally fairly common in winter, spring, and fall. Found in open woodlands; often seen at feeders. Low Conservation Concern.

American Goldfinch Spinus tristis. Breeder. Fairly common to common in all seasons in Tennessee Valley and Mountain regions.  In Inland Coastal Plain, common in winter, spring, and fall, and uncommon in summer.  In Gulf Coast region, common in winter, spring, and fall.  Found in open woodlands, brushy areas, and willow thickets. Lowest Conservation Concern.

Evening Grosbeak Coccothraustes vespertinus. Occasional and declining, mostly in late fall, winter, and spring, in all regions. Found in woodlands; often seen at feeders. MODERATE CONSERVATION CONCERN.

OLD WORLD SPARROWS - FAMILY PASSERIDAE

House Sparrow Passer domesticusExotic. Breeder. Common in all seasons and regions.  Found in Urban and suburban areas and on farms, especially those with livestock.
