Ground Breaking Scheduled for New District I Office Building

July 26, 2005

The Department of Conservation and Natural Resources will break ground on a new District I Office building at Swan Creek Wildlife Management Area on July 28 at 2:00 p.m. The building will house the three sections of the Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries (WFF) Division – Wildlife, Freshwater Fisheries, and Enforcement.

On hand for the ceremony will be District I employees, WFF Director Corky Pugh, and other Conservation Department officials.

The facility will be approximately 6900 square feet and will be located across from the existing District I office on Harris Station Road in Tanner, opened in the early 1960s. It will include a large conference room, which will be used to conduct classes and general public meetings.

“Our existing Swan Creek office is very old and small, inadequate to accommodate our services to the public. Efforts to build a new facility have been underway for many years, and finally, we can proceed,” said Pugh. “Funding for this project comes totally from hunters and anglers, the primary constituents we serve. It is our hope that this step forward will further enhance our ability to serve these and all Alabamians,” he added.

Construction of the facility, which was designed by Conservation Department architect Jay Histed, is scheduled to take about seven months. CCS Construction of Madison, Alabama is building it.

District I includes  Colbert, Cullman, Fayette, Franklin, Lamar, Lauderdale, Lawrence, Limestone,  Madison, Marion, Morgan, Walker and Winston counties.

The Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources promotes wise stewardship, management and enjoyment of Alabama’s natural resources through five divisions: Marine Police, Marine Resources, State Parks, State Lands, and Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries.
