Controlled Burns Planned For Gulf State Park
December 19, 2005
The Alabama State Parks Division plans a series of prescribed burns at Gulf State Park, beginning in late December and ending in Spring 2006. These burns will help further reduce the fuel loads rendered by Hurricanes Ivan and Katrina, and will enhance both plant and animal communities.
Even though controlled burns within the campground and surrounding corridors in 2005 eliminated some heavy fuel loads, the present fuel load is high. With a continued burning program, the Division is using the most effective tool in creating a safer environment from future wildfires within the park and in the outlying communities of Gulf Shores and Orange Beach. As continued development escalates around the park, the urban interface between fire and community grows at the same rate.
Safety and proper smoke management are of primary concern during this period. The prescribed burns will be coordinated with the Alabama Forestry Commission and both city fire departments.
