Prescribed Burn Planned for Gulf State Park

January 21, 2009

Weather Permitting, Exercise to Take Place January 28-30, 2009
A training exercise based on a current prescribed fire plan is scheduled for January 28-30, 2009 at Gulf State Park in Gulf Shores, Ala. The exercise is a cooperative endeavor between the Alabama State Parks Division, the Alabama Forestry Commission and the Cities of Orange Beach and Gulf Shores. The prescribed burns will also include participation from the Wildland Fire Academy Class—fire professionals attending a course taught by fire officials through the City of Pelham Fire Department and sponsored by the U.S. Department of Agriculture-Forest Service in Alabama.

The purpose of the exercise and prescribed fire is to create a realistic scenario based on a prescribed fire (weather permitting) within a 60-acre longleaf pitcher plant zone. The exercise will enable participants to greater provide for the safety of those called to suppress a wildland fire and enable those groups to move, isolate and coordinate suppression efforts through command and control in a cohesive manner within the park.

The remnant longleaf pitcher plant bog has historically been burned on a three-year rotation for the last 10 years. Fire is important for the longleaf pine; it stimulates the growth of pitcher plants, sundews, wildflowers and it eliminates competition from harmful plants in this coastal community.

Every effort will be made to ensure proper smoke management and safety of surrounding areas during this three-day period.

The Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources promotes wise stewardship, management and enjoyment of Alabama’s natural resources through five divisions: Marine Police, Marine Resources, State Lands, State Parks, and Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries.
