Two Butler County Residents Convicted for Violating Wildlife Laws

Dusty Casselman, 37, of Georgiana, Ala., was convicted in Butler County district court on September 22, 2009, for illegally transporting and selling feral swine. Officers with the Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries Division (WFF) of the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR) began an investigation of Casselman after receiving complaints from a citizen of illegal hunting activities.

Bryan Fisher Named Wildlife Officer of the Year by International Conservation Organization

Officer Bryan Fisher has been named Wildlife Officer of the Year by the Shikar-Safari Club International (SSCI). Fisher, an employee of the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR), is a Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries Conservation Enforcement Officer, a position he has held since 2006.

Oak Mountain State Park Takes Action to Control Deer Population

Oak Mountain State Park near Birmingham, Ala., will be closed during the four regulated archery hunts that are scheduled to control the Oak Mountain deer population and improve the herd health. The four hunts will take place on October 27, 2009, November 10, 2009, December 8, 2009, and January 5, 2010. Hunters have harvested 211 deer at Oak Mountain State Park since the regulated hunts began in 2004. This limited harvest has begun the slow process of reducing the overpopulated deer herd at Oak Mountain State Park.

Alabama Marine Police Awarded Two Homeland Security Grants

B.B. Comer Boat Ramp at Lake Guntersville Closing for Re-paving

The Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR) Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries Division (WFF) will close the public boat ramp at B. B. Comer Bridge (Hwy. 35) on Lake Guntersville in Jackson County on Wednesday, October 7 in order for the parking lot to be repaved. The ramp will be re-opened by Monday, October 12.

Feral Hog Hunters Cautioned about Swine Brucellosis

The feral hog (Sus scrofa) in Alabama is a non-native species that was brought to the Southeast centuries ago by Spanish explorers. Though popularity with hunters is increasing, current feral hog populations across Alabama and the Southeast are growing at alarming rates. The presence of feral hogs also brings with it the chance of contracting illnesses such as swine brucellosis, an infectious disease of pigs. Since the feral hog is a common hunted species in Alabama, Conservation officials are warning hunters about a potential danger associated with field dressing the animal.
