Hudson Named Wildlife Biologist of the Year

Keith Hudson of Florence has been named Wildlife Biologist of the Year by the Southeastern Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies (SEAFWA). Hudson, an employee of the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, is currently the North Alabama Nongame Wildlife Program Coordinator for the Division of Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries (WFF).

Wildland Fire Exercise/Prescribed Burn Planned for Oak Mountain State Park

Madison County School to Use Pond for Education

Plans are being developed to use the pond at the newly-built Legacy Elementary School in Madison County as an outdoor classroom. On October 26, the school staff met with Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR) biologists to discuss the educational possibilities of the pond, which will provide fishing opportunities and hands-on learning activities to satisfy requirements for all grade levels of science.

Two Butler County Residents Convicted for Violating Wildlife Laws

Dusty Casselman, 37, of Georgiana, Ala., was convicted in Butler County district court on September 22, 2009, for illegally transporting and selling feral swine. Officers with the Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries Division (WFF) of the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR) began an investigation of Casselman after receiving complaints from a citizen of illegal hunting activities.

Bryan Fisher Named Wildlife Officer of the Year by International Conservation Organization

Officer Bryan Fisher has been named Wildlife Officer of the Year by the Shikar-Safari Club International (SSCI). Fisher, an employee of the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR), is a Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries Conservation Enforcement Officer, a position he has held since 2006.

Oak Mountain State Park Takes Action to Control Deer Population

Oak Mountain State Park near Birmingham, Ala., will be closed during the four regulated archery hunts that are scheduled to control the Oak Mountain deer population and improve the herd health. The four hunts will take place on October 27, 2009, November 10, 2009, December 8, 2009, and January 5, 2010. Hunters have harvested 211 deer at Oak Mountain State Park since the regulated hunts began in 2004. This limited harvest has begun the slow process of reducing the overpopulated deer herd at Oak Mountain State Park.

Alabama Marine Police Awarded Two Homeland Security Grants
