A prescribed burn is planned at Cheaha State Park as part of a forest management plan associated with wildfire fuel reduction, wildlife habitat restoration and invasive species control. The burn will take place near the park’s campground, cabin and lodge areas between January 18 and March 1, 2024 – weather permitting.

The Alabama Forestry Commission will conduct the prescribed burn for the State Parks Division of the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR). Every effort will be made to ensure proper smoke management and safety of the surrounding areas during the burn periods.

Prescribed fire is an effective way to reduce wildfire risk, enhance wildlife habitat and maintain a healthy forest ecosystem. A properly managed controlled burn reduces the risk of wildfire by eliminating excess fuel on the ground. Prescribed fire also stimulates new plant growth that serves as food for several species including wild turkey, white-tailed deer, bobwhite quail, fox squirrel, woodpeckers and bluebirds.

ADCNR promotes wise stewardship, management and enjoyment of Alabama’s natural resources through four divisions: Marine Resources, State Lands, State Parks, and Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries. To learn more at www.outdooralabama.com.
