Wind Creek Archery Park Now Open

Alabama’s thirteenth community archery park held its grand opening on Friday, November 3, at Wind Creek State Park near Alexander City, Ala. The Wind Creek Community Archery Park is located on Alabama Highway 128 near the park’s office.

The archery park will be open year-round during normal park hours for recreational shooting, competitive tournaments and outdoor educational programming. The facility features a seven-target adult range from 20 to 50 yards and a three-target youth range of 5 to 15 yards.

Use of the archery park is free for those under 16 years of age or over 65. Wind Creek entry fees still apply. Alabamians ages 16 to 64 must have a hunting license, Wildlife Management Area (WMA) license, or Wildlife Heritage license to use the range. For non-residents, an annual WMA license or non-resident hunting license is required. Licenses are available from various local retailers or online at outdooralabama.com.

Wind Creek joins 12 other community archery parks currently in operation throughout the state including Athens, Cullman, Dothan, Demopolis, Decatur, Elba, Foley, Heflin, Lincoln, Tuscaloosa, Ozark, and Oak Mountain State Park in Pelham, Ala. These facilities are one component of the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR) effort to increase awareness and participation in the life skill of archery.

The new archery park was made possible by the following agencies and organizations: Alabama State Parks, the Archery Trade Association, Alabama Cooperative Extension System, and ADCNR’s Division of Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries with funding through license sales and federally matched Pittman-Robertson Act funding.

Additional local supporters who helped make the archery park possible through donations and contributions: Volunteers of Wind Creek, Tallapoosa County District 2 Commissioner Steve Robinson, Home Depot in Alexander City, Russell Do-It Center, A & E Metal Roofing, Lake Martin Building Supply, River Bank & Trust, Southern Pipe & Supply, Steve Pressley with City Accounting, Tallapoosa County 4-H, and The Sure Shot.

Additional recreational opportunities available at Wind Creek State Park include the recently opened zip line canopy tour, camping, hiking, horseback riding, access to Lake Martin, fishing, playground, beach area and more.
