Introduction to Handguns
4-Hour Firearm Training Session
Taught by Wildlife & Freshwater Fisheries Division Law Enforcement Firearms Instructors
This class is perfect for those who want to learn more about handgun safety and marksmanship in a low-stress, friendly environment. The following topics are covered during the class:
- Safe handling and storage
- The parts of semi-automatic pistols and revolvers
- Live fire on paper and steel targets
Eye and ear protection, as well as .22 rimfire handguns and all the ammunition needed, is provided free of charge for this class. If you already have your own handgun and appropriate ammunition, please feel free to bring it for use in the class.
Students should bring water, snacks, sunscreen, a brimmed hat, and note-taking materials. There is no tuition fee for this course. Participants will only need a Wildlife Heritage License ($11.60) to use the range. This license will allow you to use all Wildlife & Freshwater Fisheries Division shooting ranges across the state for a year.
The Wildlife Heritage License can be purchased online, at local probate offices, and at many sporting goods stores.
Participants must be 16 years of age or older.
