American Black Bear
The American Black Bear (Ursus americanus) is the most widespread inhabitant of all the North American bears. Their population was once estimated to be two million but has been reduced to an estimated 700,000 animals due primarily to habitat destruction. Black bears inhabit forested areas scattered throughout North America. They can be found as far south as Florida and as far north as Alaska.

Black Bear Range in Alabama
Historically, Black Bears were found statewide, but as suitable habitat began to dwindle over the years, bear numbers declined drastically, leaving only small, isolated populations across only a handful of counties. As population levels became critically low, the black bear was listed as a state-protected species to help recover the species in Alabama.
Today, black bears are returning throughout most of their historic range in Alabama, serving as a testament to the power of conservation efforts.
