A series of prescribed burns will take place at Wind Creek State Park in March 2020, weather permitting. The burns will take place throughout the park in an effort to enhance longleaf pine stands and wildlife habitat. The Alabama Forestry Commission will conduct the controlled burns for the Alabama State Parks Division.

Every effort will be made to ensure proper smoke management and safety of the surrounding areas during the burn periods. The Alexander City Fire Department has been notified of the scheduled burns and will be on standby if needed.

Prescribed fire is a valuable tool in maintaining longleaf pine forest and other wildlife habitat. When properly used, controlled burning reduces the risk of wildfire by eliminating excess fuel on the ground. Prescribed fire also stimulates new plant growth that serves as food for several species including wild turkey, white-tailed deer, bobwhite quail, fox squirrel, woodpeckers and bluebirds.
